Time and again we start a weight loss program of some kind. It never seems to occur to us that our weight is a symptom and not a problem. The problem is our lifestyle, our mind set, our approach to life and its problems.
Get the mind right first and the weight will take care of itself.
Our mind is a creature of habit. It repeats learned behavior.
We need to address our habits. The things we do out of repetition just because we have always done them in a particular way.
- Like putting on the left shoe first.
Having soft drinks with meals.
Eating junk when we are bored or stressed.
These habits are learned behaviors. Any behavior learned can be unlearned or modified. It just takes some attention and a little effort. We need to identify the habit and then make a plan to change it.
I did some research about habits. Here is some of what I learned.
- A new habit can be created in 3 to 6 weeks.
- If you perform the behavior every day for 3 weeks that behavior will become a habit.
- The next 3 weeks is for reinforcement.
- Habits are automatic behaviors that are triggered by a stimulus.
- A situation, a time of day, and stress are things that can trigger a habit.
- It is easier to modify or substitute an existing habit than it is to end a habit.
The new habit should not be painful.
Your mind wants to make itself comfortable.
It will do this at the expense of the rest of the body.
A case in point is a person addicted to a drug.
Even though the drug is destroying the body, the mind will satisfy its craving for comfort at the expense of everything else.
This is an important example.
The mind needs a positive program and positive habits. You are the one who programs your own mind. What you read, the TV you watch, the music you choose, the people with whom you associate. These are all choices we make that impact our programming and our habits.
Choose something small at first. Perhaps just change the time you get out of bed. Get up ten minutes earlier. Try that everyday for 45 days.
Or if you watch the news each day at 6PM try this. When the news comes on, get up, put on your shoes and go for a 30 minute walk. Do that each day for 45 days.
